Hello! My name is Melanie and I work in Youth Services.

Here are some gift suggestions for a 6 year old as you described:

Beginning reader:
Way beginning, but so fun-the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Williems
The Frog and Toad booksby Arnold Lobel
The Commander Toadbooks by Jane yolen

1rst chapter books popular with this age through about 3rd grade:
-Magic Tree House (any in series) by Mary Pope Osborne
-Time Warp Trio(any in series) by Jon Scieszka
-Geronimo Stilton book by Geronimo Stilton-Stilton is pen name-they are actually written by   Henry Winkler!  They are full of illustrations and very popular.
-Captain Underpants, by Dav Pilkey-these are part comic books and part book-they do have some potty humor-but the kids love them!
-"Stink and the world's worst super-stinky sneakers" / Megan McDonald
newest-"Judy Moody & Stink : the mad, mad, mad, mad treasure hunt" / Megan McDonald
Any of the Stink books are fun- but for a higher reader-about the same level as Magic Tree House

 Gift Books
Dugland Steer has a series of books out called: Monstorology, Dragonology, Wizardology, and Egyptology that are part non-fiction, part pop-up and so fun to read over and over again!

Dr Seuss never gets old: “If I Ran the Zoo” came to mind for your Grandson.
"I loved you before you were born" / by Anne Bowen. This is a very sweet book to give from a grandparent to a grandchild. It is a picture book and may not be to exciting to the 6 year old, but the parent may like it.

If you need more suggestions, please let us know!
