Q

I note that you have identified the location of Peacable Kingdom Furniture in 1978 as 1031 Walnut.

I'd like to confirm the full name of proprietor whose last name (I believe) was Bednark, Bednarski or similar. Can you help?

Hello

I did the research for your AAL about a business on Walnut a few months back. In 1978  Peaceable Kingdom Furniture at 1031 Walnut was in the city directory with Thomas Bednark as either the owner or manager. When I search his name in the directory, Peaceable Kingdom Furniture is listed after his name, but it doesn't say if he owned it or managed it. His home address was 1184 Westview Drive in Boulder. He is not in the current telephone book for Boulder.

  1. Tom Bednark helped put me through my last two years at CU, shooting photos of installations of his furniture on location in and around Boulder. As far as I know, he owned the shop and managed it. I still have copies of some of the photos in my files. Tom made a lot of parquet oak tables, chairs, bookcases in law offices and bedroom sets. He was located in a space on Walnut St. that was gone, replaced by the Daily Camera expansion, when I returned to Boulder in 1999.

Re: the related question about stained glass; a good friend of Tom's whose name was Hal, owned a small stain glass shop he called Valhalla Glassworks. I believe (I could be mistaken) he was located in the Goss Grove neighborhood near the high school and worked out of his house. I did a trade with Hal for a six sided cylinder pendant lamp that I later gave to a friend. My friend still has it over his kitchen table in Lyons. It's a beautiful piece.

  2. Thank you for sharing this. There still is a stained glass studio on Arapahoe Avenue in the Goss Grove neighborhood near the high school. Perhaps this is your friend's business?
