Q

Am I allowed to view scholarly journal articles online?

Hello. I attempted to view articles from the American Journal of Sports Medicine online via the BPL search engine, but failed to find any articles. Am I able to browse and view articles from this journal? Is access to different journals possible, in print or online?

Answer

Hello,

Thanks for contacting us. We do have many hundreds of journal titles in our research databases (each database  represents a different collection of titles). In our catalog, when you search a journal title, it will appear as an eJournal, and have an ACCESS ONLINE blue button next to the title. However, the best way to determine which journal titles we have in the databases is to use the journal look up tool found in our research pages. This is because many journals are not complete with full text articles, but have abstracts only beyond certain dates--a copyright restriction set by the publisher.

Here is how to access the Journal Look up:

1. Click on Research in the green menu bar across the top of the website.

2. On the left side of the landing page, below the Services and Help links, you'll see a search box called Search for a Magazine/Journal.

3. Enter the name of the journal/magazine you want.

4. If you get no results, it means we don't hold the title. If a result is returned then it will show you:

a.In which database(s) we have the title with FULL TEXT (i.e. Full Text means the entire article-- not just the abstract or index of the article). There is a link to the journal through the database name. (Once you click through, you can search just that journal, or browse for a specific issue). It will also indicate:

      b. The holding information for FULL TEXT (i.e. the date range that we have full text).

Using your example, American journal of sports medicine,  you will see that we have FULL TEXT for this journal only from 11/01/2005 to 09/30/2008 in a database called  General Reference Center Gold.  This means you have abstracts before and beyond these dates, but you'd only see the full text of the articles between those dates. When you click through the database you are at the Journal Publication page and can use the search form at the top to search only within this journal. Or browse by date for specific issue.

Although this title has limited full text, you do have the option of searching for articles and then using the link: Request an Interlibrary Loan  This is a service we provide to patrons, and we will look for the article from other libraries. Simply fill out the form that loads with your citation and submit and then we'll notify you when the article arrived.

Two other options:

1. If you don't need a specific article or journal title and only want to search for articles on a subject you can use the Academic Research guide on the research page and choose both the Gale and Ebsco publisher links that search hundreds of journals at a time for a specific subject. Within each of these you can limit by date and by full text (so you only get articles returned and not just abstracts). Each also has a link to Interlibrary Loan form if you need this.

2. You can also use the Browse available titles link under the Journal Lookup tool, that allows you to search for journals on a particular subject . In this case, I chose Health and Biological Sciences,>>Medicine>>Sports Medicine and came back with 10 titles on that subject.

I realize this email is long, but we'd also be delighted to show you in person how to access our article content. Just stop by the second floor service desk for a short tutorial on your next visit.

Attached are the links to the pages I listed above. All database access requires a current Boulder Public Library card.

Sincerely,
Gina
